The Blessing of Education
Education is something that’s easy to take for granted. It’s probably safe to say that for most of you reading this, going to school was a fundamental part of your childhood. And many of you have likely had the privilege of higher education, as well.
But in many parts of the world, basic education is not a given. There are many reasons for that. Sometimes, the family can’t afford to purchase the required uniform, books, and supplies. Other times, the children abandon school to help the family earn money.
We shared recently about the providential encounters of the Hennemann family when they traveled to Guatemala for language school. They met Florinda, a local missionary, and several families in need right in the territory where American martyr Fr. Stanley Rother had served. They started the “Gift of Hope” program to help break the cycle of poverty caused by lack of education.
Millie Hennemann shared the story of Maricela, a twelve-year-old girl who was living in very difficult conditions when Millie and Florinda first visited her family.
The family had a one-room tin home where all six siblings slept together on the dirt floor. The parents’ bed was in poor condition, and the home was infested with lice and mosquitos.
The Hennemanns raised money to build a two-room home for the family with bunk beds for the children. While that may still seem small for a family of eight, this significantly improved their living conditions.
Maricela was given an opportunity to continue her education through the Gift of Hope program. She has achieved remarkable grades and has excelled socially, as well. Next year, she wants to continue her studies at a Catholic boarding school for young ladies, where local religious sisters help them discover their gifts. Her greatest dream is to be a lawyer in order to support more families in difficult conditions.
These changes have made a significant impact on Maricela’s family. Please join us in praying for all those unable to attend school as a result of poverty and for those who, like Maricela, are striving to break the cycle of poverty through education.
